Friday morning 4:30 AM, my mate Jeremy Thomson is waiting for me outside my place to give me a ride to the airport. In goes 3 pieces of luggage for the 2 day trip. 1xbike bag, 1xBack Pack, 1xluggage bag with wheels.
I'm off to Meerendal in the Cape for the first round of the national marathon series. Looking back I may have set my self up for a bad day before it stared but in hindsight a MINDFUL lesson was learn't in the process..
Saturday morning 6:30 AM, 107KM 2300M ascent. The level on the start line was pretty high, seasoned South African Pros and some high ranked European campaigners, throw in the rocks, sand and steep rocky climbs and you got a stiff day of bike riding to negotiate.
My race in a nutshell was not great, but I LEARN'T a TON in the 70 km's I did complete until I made the decision to call it a day in hope of not doing any further damage to the body.
So..........What happened???????
Well in turned out i had some problems from compensating on the bike the week before from some saddle sore issues. Which in turn caused my left hip and glute and lower back to lock up, my right side felt on form but that's not gonna cut it at that level.
I would have to say that I should have been more attentive to the mechanics of my body while going out and training in a bit of pain and discomfort but you live and learn......often the hard way.
With that and the experience of the Meerendal Ultra I'm looking onwards to the next tests Namely the National Road Champs, Sabie Ultra Marathon and the Cape Epic in March.
Cheers.
